After coming off a tough 1-0 loss at home, Austin FC (6-2-2) hopes to make amends versus Real Salt Lake (4-3-4).
Last week’s first loss at Q2 Stadium in 2022 must have hit the squad hard, if it’s anything like what we experienced as fans. After home games this year, we’ve almost come to expect that picture of a joyous post-match player celebration in the green and black neon locker room with huggable Tik Martins. Hopefully the loss rededicates and focuses the players in preparation for the remaining two-thirds of the MLS schedule.
Meanwhile, May’s gauntlet of matches continues—games still to come against teams ranked 5th, 1st, 4th, and 3rd, respectively. Winning Saturday’s tilt would prevent two teams—LA Galaxy and FC Dallas—from potentially leapfrogging Los Verdes.
In this matchup last season, the home team won both meetings between the two clubs.
About the Opponent
RSL is itself trying to get back in the win column after a nasty loss to Nashville. Over their last five matches, the club has won one game, drawn one, and lost three. (One of those losses was against USL League 1 side Northern Colorado Hailstorm in the U.S. Open Cup.)
Their poor run of form has them in a hole that they’re desperate to dig out of. It won’t help that they’re going against an Austin FC side that’s second in the Western Conference. One of Salt Lake’s biggest issues has been on the attack. In their last five matches, the club has only been able to score once; coincidentally, it was against LA Galaxy.
To win, they likely need players like former U.S. international forward Bobby Wood and Cuban midfielder Maikel Chang to step up. Their best players so far this season have been captain Marcelo Silva and midfielder Pablo Ruiz. Silva, a center back, scored the previously-mentioned lone goal.
