After two weeks off, the Verde hit the road to take on San Jose Earthquakes.
Austin is coming off of a 1-1 draw against the Sounders. In that match, the club dominated the game possession-wise and even doubled Seattle in terms of shots on goal. But poor finishing reared its ugly head. Twenty-one shots in total (a club record) were directed toward the Sounders goal. Seattle’s second-string goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland saved 7 of them, with only one shot getting past him.
If Austin wants to get a result against the Quakes, they’ll need to not only get shots on target, but actually get the ball past the keeper.
Last season, the Verde & Black’s record against San Jose was two defeats and a draw. Fortunately, they’ll be facing a struggling San Jose side on Saturday that has yet to win a match.
Austin sits 4th in the Western Conference table after four matches.

Austin vs San Jose Kickoff
About the Opponent
In San Jose’s first four games of 2022, they’ve collected three losses and a lone draw (against Columbus). They’ll be desperate to get their first victory of the season in front of a home crowd.
Austin will need to pay special attention to Javier “Chofis” López who went off on Austin last year, scoring three times. Designated players are the difference between winning close games, and Austin must keep this Quake DP in check to have a chance to get points in California.
Austin should be up for the task. In this young season, ATX is one of only eight MLS teams to allow less than one goal per game.
One of SJ’s better players this year is Costa Rican Francisco Calvo. The center back has been a wall for the Earthquakes defensively. It’ll be interesting to see if Driussi and Ring can break Calvo down in this match.
Score Prediction
This is a game that plays right into ATXFC’s hands. Josh Wolff’s side has been without a win in their last two matches and is looking to get back to that winning formula to avoid a lowly side. Quakes will put up a fight early on, but Austin should have the advantage by halftime.
Final Score:
Austin FC – 3
San Jose Earthquakes – 1
