2022 training camp starts and Austin FC reveals 4 preseason matches on tap

Preseason training camp has officially kicked off the club announced today. Players will undergo six weeks of training at St. David’s Performance Center before the 2022 home opener versus FC Cincinnati on February 26

No La Copita tournament this year—the 2021 preseason tournament that pitted Lone Star MLS and USL clubs against each other will not return. Also gone are the days of USL scrimmages for ATX; the 2022 preseason slate features four top tier friendlies (three MLS clubs and Liga MX defending champions Atlas) in February.

2022 Preseason schedule

ATXFC gets three weeks of training under its belt before first hosting Toronto FC (Feb. 9), a team, like Austin, that finished next to last in their division in 2021. The Canadian club underwent a major retooling this offseason when head coach Bob Bradley was brought on board from LAFC.

Italian soccer fans in Texas will be unhappy to hear TFC’s blockbuster-signing, Lorenzo Insigne, won’t be available to the club until July.

On Feb. 12, El Tree travels to Houston for their only away friendly, meeting a familiar foe in the Dynamo. The Texas derby rival is another cellar-dwelling MLS club that finds itself with a new coach heading into 2022.

The marquee match of the preseason happens on Feb. 16 when Verde & Black host Liga MX Apertura 2021 title-winners Atlas FC at Q2 Stadium. In addition to two Liga MX titles, Atlas has won four Copa MX titles and four Campeón de Campeones titles.

Chicago Fire (Feb. 19) at St. David’s training facility in Northeast Austin rounds out the preseason schedule a week before the Verde’s home opener against FC Cincinnati.
