Moussa Djitté finally arrives in Austin after June 30 signing

We have visual confirmation of Moussa Djitté in the ATX.

Early this morning, a handful of intrepid Los Verdes supporters gave the 21-year old Senegalese a surprise ‘bienvenue’ at Austin-Bergstrom.

Forty-plus days after the signing was officially announced and we still don’t know exactly what caused the delay of Djitté, besides the vagaries of the Visa process.

Austin FC’s newest No. 9 would have surely made a difference for the black and green during a disappointing July and early August stretch that has included four shutout losses and two wins.

At first indicating to local media that it would be a speedy two-week process, even Josh Wolff seemed perplexed as the weeks passed. And we had no reason to doubt Wolff initially — Zan Kolmanic’s signing, from Slovenian club NK Maribor, was inked on March 2 and Z was in the Capital City by March 15.

Nevertheless, Moussa is here, and by the looks of it on social media, he’s already hit the training pitch at St. David’s Performance Center.

We can now turn our speculation to when we think he’ll first see the pitch on matchday.

A couple factors are in play. He needs to serve a minimum five day quarantine due to MLS protocols. Also, he last played professionally in May. Wolff will want to get him match fit for the second half of ATXFC’s season.

A quick glance at the schedule points to Moussa potentially getting minutes against Vancouver Whitecaps (August 18) and perhaps starting against Portland Timbers (August 21). This would be ideal. Since both are home games at Q2 Stadium, Djitté would be guaranteed a roaring ovation from Verde fans to kick off his MLS career.

What does Austin FC say about Moussa Djitté

“We are pleased to welcome Moussa to Austin FC,” commented Claudio Reyna, Austin FC Sporting Director. “He is an ascending and promising young player with a bright future ahead of him. As the Club continues to work on adding quality players to the roster, we believe Djitté is ready to contribute in the immediate term.”

In his tenure at second division French side Grenoble Foot 38, Djitté scored 15 goals and added two (2) assists in 67 appearances (46 starts).
